The Coconut Cultivation Board has allocated 2,500 million rupees (Rs. 2.5 billion) for a special subsidy program to protect coconut crops from potential El Niño conditions. Chairman Dr. Sunimal Jayakody stated that while El Niño has not affected coconut cultivation so far, prolonged dry weather in the coming months could impact crops.

Sri Lanka's Labour Ministry clarified that an international ranking placing Sri Lanka 120th globally in national minimum wage was based on 2024 Visual Capitalist data, not an ILO report. The Ministry highlighted that the country's national minimum wage has increased by over 87% since early 2024, rising from Rs. 12,500 to Rs. 30,000 per month by January 2026, meaning the 2024 ranking does not accurately reflect Sri Lanka's current wage level.
Vehicle prices in Sri Lanka have increased significantly, with some models rising by up to Rs. 4.5 million, after the Government extended a 50% surcharge on import duties through December 31. The higher rates apply to vehicles imported under Letters of Credit (LCs) opened after May 15. Vehicle Importers Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL) President Prasad Manage explained that consignments subject to the new duty regime are now entering the market, leading to higher showroom prices, and suggested alternative measures such as revising tax policy and regulating LCs to help stabilise prices.
Sri Lanka has launched a national programme to establish 250 Ceylon King Coconut Villages over the next three years, starting at the Mahayaya Estate in Kurunegala. Implemented by the Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure, the initiative aims to plant 212,500 new plants, rehabilitate 221,500 existing trees, and set up micro-processing facilities in each village. The project targets an annual harvest increase of 25 million nuts by 2030 and an increase in export earnings exceeding US$12 million, directly benefiting around 21,250 growers.
